Copying can be good! All you need to know before copying Popular Investors

Copying can be a good thing!  eToro has created a community where users can connect, share, and learn from one another, and copying is a core part of this.

How so?

On eToro, users can copy the investment strategy of other investors using eToro’s patented CopyTrader™ technology. On our platform, we have more than 2,500 investors who are part of our Popular Investor Program . These are people who have been accepted to this program based on their knowledge, investment experience and potential to be a positive member of our investing community.

These Popular Investors trade on the eToro platform and share their knowledge and experience with other members on the platform. We have a special section on the website where you can browse through our many Popular Investors and learn about their different strategies and approaches to the investment world.

Who should I copy

The profiles of our Popular Investors reveal important information. For example, the statistics of how the person has fared in the past few years. Naturally, some Popular Investors have done really well, others less so. You might be inclined to copy a PI based on their past success, however, you may want to consider some of the following criteria.

  • Length of investment: Some Popular Investors recommend that you copy them for at least six months, one year, two years or more. Make sure that your investment plan, whether it’s short, medium or long term, fits in with the Popular Investor.
  • Risk: Each Popular Investor has a risk score. Some have higher risks, and some lower. Make sure you choose one whose risk score aligns with your risk tolerance.
  • Assets: You may be interested in investing stocks, but the Popular Investor you are looking at invests heavily in commodities. Perhaps you want a Popular Investor who has crypto in his portfolio, or who balances between stocks, indices and ETFs the important thing is to check that the person is investing in the assets you want to invest in.
  • Strategy: While you may be looking to copy a Popular Investor, you want to find one who aligns with your investment strategy. Perhaps this means value investing, or a certain type of diversified portfolio.
  • Read their posts: Each Popular Investor posts their thoughts on their feed frequently. You can get a feel for the person by reading their thoughts.

Copy, but research first

Deciding to copy a Popular Investor is somewhat similar to choosing a stock. In both cases, you are investing in something which you hope will have positive results. In the case of a stock, it’s a product and the company behind the product. With a Popular Investor, you are relying on the person’s investing ability to produce positive outcomes. The common denominator is that in both cases, you need to do your research in order to figure out the right stock or the right Popular Investor.
