Wade Thompson and Peter Orthwein founded Thor Industries in 1980 when they bought out Airstream.

Combined, this enterprise constitutes one of the largest manufacturers of recreational vehicles in the world. The company’s offerings include petrol and diesel Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes, travel trailers and conventional travel trailers, fifth wheels, luxury fifth wheels, motor caravans, caravans, campervans, and urban vehicles. Thor Industries also provides aluminium extrusion and specialised component products to both recreational vehicle and other manufacturers, which include digital products and services for recreational vehicles.

Airstream was already an established name in the industry when it was acquired by Thor Industries following the economic downturn of the late 1970s and returned to profitability in its first year under Thor Industries. Other brands associated with the company include Cruiserrv, Highland Ridge, and Dutchmen. Thor Industries has been publicly trading on the NYSE under the THO ticker since 1986.
