The firm was founded in 1986, and is headquartered in San Jose, California.

The firm’s product portfolio covers a wide range of different technologies. The company offers AudioSmart for voice and audio processing, ConnectSmart for high-speed video, audio and data connectivity, and DisplayLink for transmitting compressed video frames across low bandwidth connections. The firm also offers Natural ID, which is a fingerprint ID technology used in automobiles, personal computers, and various other applications. Other products from Synaptics Inc. include ClearPad, ClearView, TouchView, TouchPad, SecurePad, ClickPad, and ForcePad.

The company sells its products through direct sales, outside sales representatives, distributors, and resellers, with its main clients being mobile and PC original equipment manufacturers, and consumer electronics manufacturers. The firm went public in 2002 and trades on the NASDAQ where it is listed under the ticker SYNA.
