What Is Snowflake Inc.?
Headquartered in the Silicon Valley San Francisco Bay Area of San Mateo, Snowflake Inc. is a cloud-based data storage, analytics, SaaS and software company that was founded in July 2012. The company provides businesses with a single, integrated and highly secure platform. It fuses data warehousing with flexible big data platforms and cloud computing at highly competitive prices, freeing businesses from relying on databases tied to hardware. Effectively, its platform brings together all users, all data and all workloads in a single cloud service, enabling businesses to securely access data from any location.

The company came out of stealth mode in 2014 and has been running on Amazon S3 since then and on Microsoft Azure since 2018. It was designated a “Cool Vendor” in Gartner’s prestigious Magic Quadrant and took first prize in the 2015 Strada+Hadoop World Startup Competition.

In 2020 Snowflake Inc. applied to be listed on the NYSE under the ticker SNOW. It acquired CryptoNumerics for $7.1M in July 2020. During September that year, its IPO attracted record investment for the software company. On the first day, the share price increased by almost 112% from a previous $100-$110 in the prelude to the IPO. The market valuation of Snowflake then exceeded $70 billion.
