The firm can trace its history back to 1868, when founder Orlando McLean Scott opened his first hardware store in Marysville, Ohio, which also sold seed to local farmers and homeowners. The firm is still headquartered in Marysville, Ohio, and continues to run a storefront in the town.

The firm sells grass seed, plant food, fertilizer, weed control, and pest control products, primarily through major retailers and distributors as well as through hardware stores, nurseries, garden centres, and food and drug stores. The firm’s brands include Scotts, Miracle-Gro, Earth Gro, Osmocote, Hyponex, and Botanicare, as well as pest and weed control brands Ortho, RoundUp and TomCat.

The company’s subsidiary, The Hawthorne Gardening Company, provides nutrients, lighting and additional materials for the hydroponic growing segment. While the company operates primarily within the US, it also has a presence in Canada, China, and the Netherlands. The firm is listed on the NYSE where it trades under the stock ticker SMG.
