It announced plans to pursue a target business in the beauty, media, technology, e-commerce, or online sector in the US. Founded in 2020 with Joanna Coles as CEO, Northern Star Investment Corp. II has its headquarters in New York.

On 22 February 2021, Northern Star Investment Corp II and Apex Clearing Holdings announced their merger. Apex, a fintech for fintechs, is based in Dallas, Texas, and operates within the United States. Following the completion of the merger, Apex Clearing is expected to be listed on the NYSE under the ticker APX. The deal is reported to be worth approximately $4.7bn. Apex offers a range of services designed to assist fintech companies, including a clearing and custody engine that supports a broad selection of account types, financial instruments and financing solutions, a robust suite of APIs that support the complete trading and investing lifecycle, a full-stack business solution to streamline internal processes, and an open architecture ecosystem of pre-integrated turnkey platforms and specific services.
