As a multinational energy utility, National Grid manages the transmission and distribution of gas and electricity. The company was founded in 1989 and has its head office in Warwick, UK, with operations in the UK and the US. In line with the directives of the UK government, National Grid committed itself to a net-zero future by 2050. As of January 2021, this energy utility managed more than 7,000 kilometres of overhead electricity lines and more than 7,500 kilometres of gas pressure pipelines in the UK.

In October 2020, the organisation announced the commencement of its National Grid Renewables initiative. This programme constitutes a shift from traditional energy to renewable energy and will run in the United States. The focus will be on the development and management of renewable energy plants, such as solar and wind farms.

National Grid has four operational segments, namely UK Electricity Transmission, UK Gas Transmission, US Regulated, and National Grid Ventures and Others. This last division manages investments and explores possible growth opportunities. The other segments mainly focus on the operations of the electricity and gas distribution networks.
