In addition to its brick-and-mortar stores around the United States, the company also operates direct mail catalogue and electronic commerce subsidiaries. The firm was founded in 1858 and is headquartered in New York City.

The firm’s brands include Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, and more than 170 speciality stores that include Bloomingdale’s The Outlet, Bluemercury, Macy’s Backstage and STORY. The firm primarily sells men's, women's, and children's apparel and accessories, cosmetics, fragrances, and home furnishings, and various other consumer goods. Private label brands offered by the company include Alfani, Aqua, Bar III, Belgique and many others. The company employs a total of around 90,000 people.

Macy's history can be traced to 1858 when founder Rowland H Macy opened the R. H Macy & Co. dry goods store in New York City. The firm’s historic flagship store in Manhattan's Herald Square has held the title of world's largest department store since 1924. The firm has sponsored the world-famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, since 1924. The firm trades on the NYSE under the stock ticker M.
