What Is Equinix Inc?
Founded in 1998, Equinix Inc is an internet provider and data centres multinational based in Redwood City, California. The company offers a data centre-based interconnection platform and internet infrastructure system. The system is powered by over 200 data centres across 24 countries spread over 5 continents. In January 2015, Equinix decided to convert its company status to a real estate investment trust (REIT) and is also now a constituent of the MSCI USREITIndex. Equinix became the third data centre provider to receive permission from the IRS to take on REIT status.

Equinix functions as a B2B cloud services provider. Its business model differs from other major cloud providers such as AWS in that it hosts ‘private’ rather than shared cloud facilities, offering corporate clients a higher level of security. The company generates most of its revenue by providing “colocation”, whereby it provides space, power, cooling, and security for its customers’ servers at Equinix’s own data centre locations.

The firm’s stock is publicly listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker EQIX. In December 2021, Equinix announced a $320m acquisition of MainOne, a West African data centre and connectivity solutions company with operations in Nigeria, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast.
