Established in 1945, Dr. Martens PLC is a British clothing company that designs, develops, produces, and sells footwear. In addition, the brand also produces a range of accessories such as laces, scarves, and bags, all under the Dr. Martens brand name. The company operates a regional model across three regions: EMEA (headquartered in London), the Americas (headquartered in Portland), and APAC (headquartered in Hong Kong), with its head office located in London. It also operates out of various locations worldwide, including Northamptonshire, Paris, Düsseldorf, Stockholm, Milan, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Zhuhai, and Ho Chi Minh City.
The company founder, Klaus Maertens, was a German army doctor during World War II who had sustained a foot injury and wished to design a boot to aid in his recovery. This boot became the prototype of the company. It featured a unique design with an air-cushioned sole for comfort.
The brand was bought by the R. Griggs Group in 1952, which redesigned the shoe and gave it its now well-known yellow welt stitch. This design went on to become a staple in British culture and a prominent symbol of the 1970s punk scene. The brand trades on the LSE under the ticker DOCS.
