Incorporated in 1984, BlackBerry Limited has its headquarters in Waterloo, Canada.

Formerly known as Research In Motion Limited, the company changed its name to BlackBerry Limited in July 2013. The company operates through three segments, including Cyber Security, IoT, and Licensing and Other. The Cyber Security segment consists of the company's BlackBerry Spark software platform, BlackBerry AtHoc, BlackBerry Alert, and SecuSUITE. BlackBerry's IoT segment includes BlackBerry QNX, BlackBerry Certicom, BlackBerry Radar, BlackBerry IVY, and other Internet of things (IoT) applications. The company's Licensing and Other segment manages intellectual property arrangements and settlement awards as well as the company's service access fees (SAF) business.

BlackBerry stock is listed on the NYSE under the ticker BB. As of February 2021, the company owns approximately 38,000 worldwide patents and applications. Through a partnership with the University of Windsor, BlackBerry develops and delivers a cybersecurity curriculum for the university's master's program in applied computing. The company also develops and markets an intelligent vehicle data platform, BlackBerry IVY, through an agreement with Amazon Web Services, Inc.
