The company was established in 1999, following a merger between the Swedish company Astra AB and the British company Zeneca Group PLC.

AstraZeneca stock is traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker AZN. In 2020, the company developed the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, which was approved for use in the UK in December of that year. In November 2021, the company unveiled a £1bn new research and development centre that will house 16 laboratories and 2,200 scientists, making it the largest science lab in the UK and the pharmaceutical company's largest single-site investment to date.
